Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue has confirmed reports of an attack on him by Terrorists Herdsmen on his farm at Tyo-mu, along Makurdi – Gboko road early Saturday.
Mr Ortom confirmed the attack while speaking with pressmen at the Benue Peoples House, saying that he was inspecting the farm when Terrorists Herders ambushed him and his security personnel and opened fire.
He reiterated that the law on ranching for the state will not be repealed, as no intimidation could force him to go back on the decision of Benue people against open grazing.
On Saturday, multiple reports detailed that the convoy of the governor came under gunfire along the Makurdi-Gboko highway. Mr Ortom was returning to Makurdi from Gboko when the incident happened.
In February, the Benue state government impounded 210 cows from Fulani herders who had violated the state Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law of 2017, the cows were later released after a N5 million fee was paid.
