People of Ebonyi State raises alarm over the criminal activities of Ebubeogu security outfit

On a personal note, I commend every genuine effort taken at safeguarding lives and property of the southeasterners. I commend the resolve of the Governors of the zone to set up a regional security network codenamed, “Ebubeagu”.

Despite my support for the above, there are some reservations which I noted immediately the Ebubeagu security network was declared.
Such reservations were the need for it to have a legislative backing, the need for Governors to play by the rules by not converting same to a private militia, the need for a reasonable level of independence of the Ebubeagu from the conventional security agencies and above all the need for thorough and rigorous training for the prospective Ebubeagu members.

In view of the foregoing, it is saddening to note that there is no legislative backing yet for the Ebubeagu security network, no training of any sort and no modus operandi for its budgeting and the outfit is already having a field day in Ebonyi state. Massive arrests of Law-abiding citizens in the state capital who stay outside beyond the hours of 9pm currently holds sway and such arrested persons do bail themselves with the sum of #15,000.00(fifteen thousand naira only). I nearly fell victim a night they raided Onuebonyi junction.

Be the above anomalies as they are, their newest modus operandi is that of confiscation and subsequent screening through the phones of Students. As it currently stands, the Ebubeagu Security network is screening students’ phones at Ishieke and one is forced to ask, “is this another SARS?”.
